Mayoral Candidate Forum on Food System Issues - "Local Food, Local Economies" - A Success!
In one of the last debates before the election, we filled the cafeteria at the Sustainability Academy at Barns, and listened to the mayoral candidates discuss a wide array of topics under the heading of "Local Food". Moderated by Hilary Martin of Digger's Mirth Collective Farm, the candidates were all broadly supportive of local food, though differed on the details of the programs they would implement and the depth of their support.
We also "walked the walk", providing a simple meal of chili and scratch-baked cornbread, sourced with as many local ingredients as possible. Based on cost data obtained during our trip to City Market for provisions,(Yes, the put the amount of local/VT sourced on the reciept), the meal was two-thirds local in terms of dollars spent.
